# RTF to Markdown converter

Convert Rich Text Format (.rtf) into clean Markdown with paragraphs, bold and italic kept.

## Purpose

Turn an RTF document from WordPad, TextEdit or an older word processor into Markdown you can edit, publish or add to an AI agent knowledge base. Readable text, paragraphs and basic emphasis are kept.

## How to use this tool

1. Open a .rtf file from your device, or paste RTF that starts with {\rtf.
2. Choose Convert to Markdown. Conversion happens in your browser.
3. Read any notes about dropped content, then copy or download the Markdown.

## Limits and what to check

The conversion runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded. RTF support is partial: fonts, colours, page layout, images and embedded objects are not kept, and tables become plain text. Read the notes under the result and compare it with the original before you use it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser and nothing is sent to AI Smarty. Files can be up to 2 MB and 500,000 characters.

### What formatting is kept?

Paragraphs, line breaks, tabs, bold, italic, accented letters and Unicode characters such as emoji. Fonts, colours, sizes and page layout are not carried over.

### What happens to images, tables and embedded objects?

Images, embedded objects and field codes are left out, and you are told when that happens. Table cells are kept as text separated by bars rather than rebuilt as a table, so check them against the original.

### Why was my file refused?

Files that are not RTF, contain embedded binary data, are nested too deeply or are larger than the limits are refused safely rather than partly converted. Saving the document again as plain RTF from your word processor often helps.
